Slide Maze for Android is a 3D puzzle game with a simple premise - slide your cube (Humphrey) around each level to find the fastest route to the finish line, but there's a catch! You can only move your cube once it has stopped sliding, which means you will need to plan ahead if you want to progress with the fewest possible moves.
There are 56 levels to complete; ranging from the easy introductory levels to some head-scratchingly difficult mazes that provide plenty of challenge for even the most seasoned puzzle fans - and if that's not enough, you can always create your own with the built-in level editor.
The game includes plenty of unlockables to get your hands on, including bonus levels filled with coins, new characters, and an extra soundtrack - all of which makes the game more rewarding for dedicated players, and instills a 'just one more play' mindset that's hard to resist.
Graphically, Slide Maze has a simple aesthetic with some subtle light and shadow effects that helps it stand out from the screen, with an interface that is well presented and easy to navigate. The minimalist art style allows for some complex puzzles without ever looking too busy or distracting from the gameplay.
Also worth a mention are the procedural sound effects and background music, which match the feel of the game well, and will keep your ears happy while you're sliding around.
Slide Maze looks and sounds great, is packed with compelling puzzles, and yes, it's fun. Go get it.
FREAKS!! is a bizarre and fascinating physics-based puzzle game for iOS devices, with a unique twist on the genre that should keep puzzle fans occupied for many hours.
The goal of FREAKS involves getting 'the princess' to the exit portal by swiping the screen to cause a chain-reaction of physics events to aid her escape, while breaking all the glass on each stage.
The princess is a pink ball who rolls and bounces around fairly passively, so it's up to you to plan ahead and create the kind of chaos needed to complete the stage while gravity does the rest. Each puzzle also has a number of 'freaks' who are essentially glass cubes intended to hinder (or help) your progress.
Breaking all the glass on a stage (including the fiendish 'freaks') will earn you a 3 star bonus. This simple and compulsive gameplay is deceptively difficult and makes for a pretty addictive time-killer that's well worth a look.
Graphically, FREAKS!! goes for a cute and macabre look that is visually appealing while being distinctly different to other physics puzzlers like Angry Birds, but the parallels become obvious when it comes to the gameplay, which should be instantly familiar to mobile gamers.
Music and sound effects are pleasing and fit the theme of the game nicely, and the facial expressions on the characters make this a game that's easy to pick-up and easy to like. Grab it, play it, let us know what you think in the comments!
Skin and Bones (by Addictive 247) is a retro-style platformer with a simple premise; to complete each level you must switch between two characters, each with unique abilities that will help or hinder your progress through the tricks and traps laid out across 6 varied worlds.
Skin, who appropriately enough actually has skin, is fast and agile, and spends his time using skeletal co-protagonist, Bones' head as a handy platform to cross spikes and lava to reach shiny gems strewn around the level.
While the graphics don't jump out as anything special, this game really shines in the gameplay department. Switching between the two characters to complete each level is genuinely fun, and well worth a look!
